The Challenge

Patients do not search for a periodontist. They search for what they are feeling. A gum receding on one tooth. A tooth that suddenly feels loose. Those searches were being answered by general dentists and national health sites with far bigger websites and far more links.

OC Perio & Implants had three board-certified specialists, two of them international lecturers in implantology and periodontics, and almost no organic reach to match. In the three months to August 2025 the site drew 557 clicks from 168,032 impressions. Google was showing the practice constantly. It was not showing it high enough to be clicked.

The Process

Six workstreams over twelve months. The technical and local work made the practice competitive for the searches that book cases. The content work made it findable earlier, while the patient is still describing a symptom.

1. Site Speed and Technical Health Audit

Most patients open the site on a phone, often in the waiting room of the dentist who just referred them. That is the experience we measure first. Clinical photography makes a specialty site heavy, and a slow page loses the patient before a word of it is read.

  • Measured load speed on a phone for the homepage and every treatment page
  • Compressed the clinical image library without losing detail
  • Removed the scripts and add-ons that cost speed and earned nothing
  • Fixed the broken links and dead ends patients and Google were hitting
  • Set a speed benchmark we report on monthly, so it never quietly slips back

2. Technical SEO Foundation

The practice had already invested in content: dozens of treatment pages, a patient FAQ library, a blog. The problem was that several pages competed with each other, and the ones that book cases were buried deepest.

  • Rewrote every treatment page around the words patients type, not clinical terminology
  • Gave each treatment one page to own: implants, gum grafting, LANAP, All-on-4, Perioscope
  • Connected every article to the treatment it leads to, so readers land where they can book
  • Made the practice, the three doctors and each procedure clear to Google and to AI search
  • Cleared out years of old and duplicate pages

3. Local SEO and Google Maps Optimization

Someone searching “dental implants near me” in Mission Viejo is ready to book. Google answers with a map pack and results weighted to their city, so these rankings are won city by city.

  • Rebuilt the Google Business Profile with the full procedure list and specialist categories
  • Corrected the practice listings across local, medical and dental directories
  • Strengthened the signals tying the practice to Mission Viejo and the cities around it
  • Added implant pages for Irvine, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills
  • Ran a review strategy to hold map position against multi-location competitors

4. Content Strategy for Search Intent

Those symptom questions were being answered by everyone except the specialists. So we built the pages that answer them, written to a clinical standard and linked to the treatment each one leads to. Four went live during the engagement. Together they now bring more than 1,100 visits a month, led by the gum recession article at 644.

  • Mapped the questions patients search before they have a diagnosis
  • Built one long-form answer page per question, reviewed against the doctors’ guidance
  • Linked every article into the treatment it leads to
  • Added FAQ sections using the exact phrasings patients type
  • Closed every page with a way to book, not just the end of an article

5. Link Building and Authority Growth

To outrank a general dentist, a specialist has to look more credible to Google, not only more relevant. That credibility comes from which respected sites reference yours, and for health topics Google sets the bar higher than anywhere else.

  • Earned coverage in dental and health publications that carry real weight in the field
  • Put the doctors’ credentials to work: board certification and international lecturing open doors most practices cannot reach
  • Directed that new credibility to the pages already winning patients
  • Reviewed the profile every month, so nothing low quality attached to the domain

6. Tracking and AI Search

Most practices cannot tell you where a patient came from. The enquiry lands in the inbox and the trail ends there. Closing that gap is how the practice can see which patients came from an AI assistant.

  • Set up source capture on every form and on the chat widget, so each enquiry carries its origin into the CRM
  • Split AI assistant referrals out of direct traffic in reporting, which is where they otherwise disappear
  • Tagged campaign links so paid, social and email never land in the same bucket
  • Structured the practice details, the doctors and each procedure so assistants can quote them correctly
  • Put AI referrals in the monthly report next to Google

Patients Are Already Arriving From ChatGPT

Ask an assistant for a periodontist in Orange County and the practice comes up. Those referrals are already arriving, and the practice can see them, which most cannot. AI traffic lands in reports as direct traffic unless somebody splits it out.

They also arrive further along than most visitors. After the homepage, the two pages they open first are the appointment page and the financing page. ChatGPT leads, and Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity have started sending people too.

Twelve Months of Compounding

The strategy started compounding in December. From there organic traffic climbed almost every month, finishing at an all-time high.

  • Organic traffic grew nearly six times over. From 557 clicks across the summer of 2025 to 3,333 across the same three months of 2026, with July 2026 the strongest month on record at 1,433 clicks.
  • The local top 3 went from two keywords to five. Seven now sit in the top 5, and “periodontist near me” climbed from position 6 into the top 3.
  • Four new articles built the pipeline. The pages answering the questions patients ask before diagnosis now bring more than 1,100 visits a month between them.
